As
we close out one year and begin anew, it’s a good time to clean house -
more figuratively than anything else (though my tub could use a good
scrubbing). It’s a time to reflect on the past year and see if the
direction in which you’ve been going is what you intended. I find that
one’s intention is a strong indicator of one’s path. In fact, it’s
often in the absence of intention where the breakdown of direction
occurs.
Once
you set an intention, you may be amazed at how that intention underlies
what you do. Take a look at last year’s resolutions (if you write them
down) and see how you did. Though New Year’s resolutions receive a lot
of flack, I often hear from folks that they actually did accomplish a
number of things on their list. That’s the power of intention.
So
what are you intentions for 2008? Give yourself time to contemplate
this as they could determine the underlying thread of your next year.
As you think, so shall you become.
If
you’ve chosen yoga as a path towards health, you will find that as you
become physically healthier, you will look to other places in your life
that could also be improved. This may include but is not limited to
your relationship with food, family, employment and the Earth. You will
see that once you become connected with your physical body and begin to
listen to it’s needs, it becomes easier to see where you are not being
consistent with yourself in other areas of your life as your body will
let you know.
This
is why I believe yoga ultimately becomes more than a physical routine,
even if that’s how it starts out. That’s why it was a lifestyle choice
for so many people years ago in India. This connection which yoga embodies leads each person to become joined with everything else around him or her.
During
this time when many of us spend more time with our computers than with
each other, yoga has prospered - just another example of how essential
our need is for connection with ourselves and the natural rhythms of
life.
May
the New Year bring you closer to being alive in each moment, awake and
aware of everything around you, and may you come closer to being who
you were meant to be.
